The Devil’s Feast is the third in the series after the excellent debut, The Strangler Vine. The second, The Infidel Stain, I thought was a bit of a dud in comparison, too convoluted and a bit implausible. This one, however, is a return to form and after a slow start, held my attention throughout. Comparison as an earlier-era Holmes and Watson comes to mind, Avery in particular being a likeable junior officer duffer, but a bit dim (also the narrator). Blake is different, wily, secretive and diffident. Together this odd couple are growing on me and I look forward to the next adventure.Product details

I really enjoyed this mystery! It was full of interesting characters, not the least of which are Avery and Blake. They make a great team solving some very confusing murders. Lots of interesting information, too. I underlined several sections.
This is the second Carter historical mystery I’ve read and I was caught by both of them. Her great strengths are a detailed knowledge and understanding of 19th century England, actually London, and her terrific detectives. I wish I’d read the first book in the series (set, I believe, in India) before I’d come across the last two—but I hope she keeps writing more in this series.
Disappointed since I loved the first two books in this series. This is deep in culinary facts -so much so that the plot drags. Fin ished it but didn't care who or why did what
I loved this book. The deep and winding description of foods, the clothing, physical features of the characters, and the details of the various venues remind me very much of Charles Dickens. The story grabs you and won't let go. You can almost smell the streets and jails, taste the food, and touch the people. Good job. The only reason I void not go 5 stars is that F-bomb. I am not an expert on the usage of that word, but I have a difficult time imagining that in the 1830's or 1840's it was used in the same phrasing as it is used in 2017.
After thoroughly enjoying the first two Blake and Avery novels I was quite disappointed in this latest entry in the series, which provides neither the plot nor character development of its predecessors. The author relies overmuch on researched details of recipes and culinary advances of the age, which are initially interesting but become tiresome, and includes barely any of the political backdrop, history, and intrigue of the first two novels. The action, such as it is, takes place almost exclusively in one club, and involves a cast of one-dimensional and forgettable new characters. I nevertheless remain hopeful that the series will continue and return to prior form.
Really enjoyable story about a topic I wouldn't have though to be interested in, but it really draws one in. Some people I've talked with complain that it seems way too similar to Sherlock Holmes stories (genius detective who doesn't share all and is developing an increasing opium habit, narrator/helper is an Afghanistan war vet with a limp), but it is extremely well done and very interesting.
Avery is visiting London, but Blake is indisposed - suffering a penance for ignoring a request from Collinson. He stops by the famous kitchen of the Reform Club to visit little Matty Horner and finds himself invited to dine at the private table of the very famous (and real) chef Soyer. When a guest of that dinner dies, Avery is asked to investigate even if Blake is not available. Poison and mayhem are afoot but who is the target and what is the motive, politics, international relations, personal enmity, mischief, or something else? This one really threw me and finding out Soyer was historical was quite interesting.
