I bought this series on a whim. I was looking for something light and uplifting. This book fit the bill. Personally, right now I am struggling with some rather crippling depression. I read to find escape and relief. Currently, all my favorite books/ series are in a dark place and to my frustration- I just can't handle them right now. I read a review that compared this series to Ann McCafry's Harper Hall of Pern. This book does not have the same depth or complexity of my all time favorite. What it does share is a heroine that has grit, determination, and hope for something better. All things I am in very short supply of. Another disconcerting aspect of my health condition is an inability to concentrate. This book is short-term making it perfect for me. just because a story is not earth staggeringly epic does not mean it does not have important worth. Reading this story helped me to connect with my own determination and hope. It has inspired me to Get Up and get on with my day. If any of you have ever dealt with depression you know what a big deal this is. So, a big thanks to the author, keep doing what you're doing- I'm off to start my day.Product details

Mika is a midlevel earth elemental who thinks she can’t possibly be of any use except as an “artisan” (and something else to do with vials that’s very important that only she can do but what use those vials have is yet unclear!) until a baby gargoyle (yeah lol there is gargoyle sex and reproduction in this world) asks for her help. Mika in true monomyth fashion, tries to refuse the call to action to no avail and witnesses atrocities being committed. Adventures commence! Okay that’s a light summary that probably hasn’t been written before.
Writing is kinda bad. I counted the phrase “midlevel earth elemental” mention 7 times in this book. Mostly in the beginning. Twice in one chapter. 6 times, it was Mika referring to herself. Also this author likes the phrase “booted feet” which also makes an appearance twice. “Boots” is not descriptive enough, apparently. It was a fantasy book so I imagine you can also have booted hooves and booted fins, however none of the magical creatures were wearing clothes or footwear of any sort.
The world is a little confusing. So is it earth but with magic light balls? Is it a fantasy world but with buses? Mika is an earth person but can also use fire? So it’s not like avatar where certain people can use one element and one person (the avatar / FSPP) can use all of them? But some are stronger than others? How is this decided? Genetics? Are there other pieces of elements people can specialize in? Like can you be a water elemental but specialize in ice? But can you practice to be good? WHAT THE HELL ARE THOSE VIALS FOR?
I like the gargoyles. And there isn’t romance in this book which is mildly refreshing but if someone liked someone I wouldn’t mind.
The heroine of Magic of the Gargoyles, Mika, is trying to hone her skills in quartz but right in the middle of her first job, she has a baby gargoyle at her door, frantic and scared. Unsure about what is going on, Mika follows the baby into a really bad part of town only to discover powerful elementals abusing their gifts. Upon completion of her current mission, the baby gargoyle indicates that rest of of her nest has also been kidnapped and will be sold to the highest, and meanest, bidders. Mika has no choice but to intervene and hope for the best...
The location of the story is pretty ambiguous - it could almost be anywhere. This allows the reader to take what descriptions are given and build their own version of the world Rebecca Chastain has created. Mika is a compassionate soul. She is working hard to complete a job that should catapult her quartz creations to the top of everyone's list of supplier. When a gargoyle in need asks for her help, she stops her current task to come to another baby's aid. Then Mika continues to push aside this monumental career maker or breaker to help rescue the remaining babies.
Magic of the Gargoyles is a such a fantastic book. The plot is unique and exciting. The story line packs such a punch that you can't help but be drawn into and fully engaged in the story. The emotional content is in regards to the plight of the baby gargoyles was palpable. Mika's emotions transfer to the reader.
The author did a wonderful job developing the story in the short urban fantasy novella. I'm looking forward to continuing with the series with book 2, Curse of the Gargoyles.
