I liked this book and the insecurities and obstacles they both faced. The character development earns this 4 stars to me. However, while I understand that sex is necessarily a factor for a married couple, like a couple of other reviewers I was surprised at so much attention paid to it. I would have recommended the series to my teenage niece, but even though the sex is not discussed in detail, I am uncomfortable with her reading this one.Tags : An Uncommon Courtship (Hawthorne House) [Kristi Ann Hunter] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b>"Engaging Regency romance to sweep you away."--</b><b> USA Today</i></b><b> Happy Ever After Blog<BR></b><BR>Life for Lady Adelaide Bell was easier if she hid in her older sister's shadow--which worked until her sister got married. Okay, so I'm at 58% on my and am still shaking my head. For close to $8, I expected more from this book. (This book should definitely be a freebie or a. 99¢er at the most.)
Ugh...for a youngest daughter of an Earl, I would think that our leading lady would be a tad more sophisticated and confident. Yes, I realize her parents favored their older daughter endlessly but it's not as if Adelaide was a drooling hunch back. She was supposedly beautiful and intelligent and grew up in an affluent environment so I'm wondering why the author made her so weak of character. Yes, I also realize that her immature and sexually inexperienced 24 year old hubby abandoned her after their hasty wedding and ran home to his older brother, a Duke, because the H wanted to pretend that he wasn't married. For crying out loud, rather than moping about the house , she had every opportunity to explore all the wonders of London with her myriad friendly servants. Or, why not occupy her time and make plans to redecorate the townhouse to her exclusive taste now that she was on her own? (She barely knew the dude so why be depressed since he actually saved her from a life of drudgery living with her unlikable family.) Personally, I would be celebrating my freedom and embracing each and every new day as an adventure. Being a confident, independent woman would more than likely cause MIA hubby to take notice of her, right? Instead, we get an immature moper (is that even a word?) as our heroine...YAWN.
Keeping my fingers crossed that something/anything exciting finally starts to happen because I sure hate to waste my hard earned money on a dull read. Nothing's worse than that for me...
On a positive note, the book cover was lovely. It isn't very often when the characters on the cover actually match the descriptions of both our leads. Well done!
Starting with the negatives I've read Some have complained about the wedding night. It wasn't explicit or even particularly detailed. I've seen more on television commercials. Some of the reviewers have said that they wouldn't allow a teenager to read it. Unless they've been extremely sheltered, teens are introduced to the perverted and abusive and casual on prime time television and in school. Knowing what my teenage nieces have been exposed to by media and friends, I want them to have the opportunity to see a different perspective. I appreciated the addition as it addressed a significant part of any new marriage, especially between such innocents. It could have been written differently, but then it would be another writer's story. I ask myself would the story be the same without it? In this particularly story, it was a significant part of the development of their relationship, revealing a great deal about both of them. I thought it well done and wouldn't change it.
The story started a bit slow, and there were things that drove me crazy. However, conflict is what makes a story worth telling. Once I stopped grumbling about what I didn't like about how Trent was handling the whole thing and allowed myself to embrace the storytelling, it was a struggle to put the book down until I finished. I hurt for Trent and Adelaide and laughed and cheered. There were bits I starred because they spoke so clearly to my heart. I'm going to read it again and can't wait for the next book in the series.
I have loved this series but this one just wasn't as good for me. While I enjoyed the first two and the scripture and faithfulness to God, this book was excessively imbued with not just scripture but very preachy. The story repeated itself often. It just wasn't as believable as the previous ones. The storyline was very good but Trent was more than a bit whiney. Something was simply missing.
I absolute loved this book and was a bit surprised to see that all of the reviews so far haven't been five stars. I loved getting to know Trent and I loved getting to know Adelaide as well. They were so sweet and there were plenty of hilarious as well as a couple of sad moments in the book. The character development was phenomenal and I loved seeing them grow not only in their relationship, which was a joy to watch and to laugh with them on may occasions, but it was also a pleasure to see them grow in their faith. I adored the revisiting of characters from previous books and getting to know Griffith that much better. He's awesome! And I can't wait to read about his story as I'm sure it will be a special one. There were few grammatical errors and there was mentions of sex within marriage but No explicit content and No undue descriptions. It was perfectly respectable and clean while still giving the reader enough to display the growing attraction between the two. Five stars and more for another hit by the woman who is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Thanks again Mrs. Hunter.
